BLOGS & NEWGROUPS
1. Blogs- A blog refers to an online journal where entries are posted. The word blog has been derived from weblog.
The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger”.
A blog comprises text, hypertext, images and links(to other webpages and to video, audio and other files.)
Features of blogs:-
i. The archive feature of blogs makes available the older posts of the blog.
ii. Comments feature of blogs allows readers to post their feedback/remarks for the blog content.
Blogs are used to convey messages about events, announcements, news, reviews, etc. Blogs are usually managed using a web browser and this requires active internet connection. You can also use offline blog software to create content first and later publish the content when an active internet connection is available.
There are hundreds of websites that offer blog service for free.
Some of the popular blogs
include:
2. E-group- refers to an online community where people discuss on
topics of common interests. A message posted in such a discussion
is known as a post. All the posts are listed together on a discussion
board, which is viewable to all the members of the group. An e group
is another name online clubbing where you meet people of your
tastes and likes, discuss things and then leave. Many portals allow us
to create egroups. Some popular ones are: groups.yahoo.com,
groups.google.com.
3. Newsgroup- A newsgroup or forum is online community bulletin
board, where users can post messages, respond to posted
messages, or just read them. Groups of related messages are known
as threads. Newsgroups are also called clubs or bulletin boards or
message boards at times.
In newsgroup a person can post a message, reply to a message or
just read messages. When a user sends a message, the news server
posts it for everyone to read. Other members of the news group can
now respond to the message.
Examples of some newsgroups are:
❖ Alt.tennes
❖ Alt.astrology
❖ Comp.language.c++etc.
Difference between e groups and newsgroups-
1. Just like e groups, newsgroups topics are organized in the form of
threads and the entire history of interactions (posts) under a thread
can be viewed by accessing a particular topic. Newsgroups are often
moderated by stringent rules and they tend to be very focused about
the topic of discussion.
2. Unlike e groups that are web-based, newsgroups requires special newsreader software to be installed in the user’s system. Also need to know the address of the news server to access the forums.
3. The main difference between them is with respect to the sharing of contents. E-groups forums do not share the contents between each other. All the contents of an e group are confined to a single server. However, news groups are decentralized which means the messages of a news groups are duplicated a hundreds of servers around the world. When a user posts to a news server, it is first stored locally and then shared and synchronized with the rest of the newsgroup servers that are connected with the same newsgroup.
